Pedestrian accidents: Avoiding highway injuries

Imagine having your car die while you're driving it on the highway. Maybe you ran out of gas, a tire blew or the engine just stopped working. Whatever the reason, you're now stranded until help arrives.

What should you do to avoid getting into a highway accident? Being safe could mean the difference between walking away and ending up in a fatal collision. Here are three things you can do to stay safe when you're a pedestrian on the highway.

1. Stay in your car

Unless there is a hazard making it dangerous to stay in your vehicle, it's smarter to stay inside. Why? The metal framework protects you if your vehicle's hit. If you're standing near the vehicle and get hit, you have no protection and are more likely to be killed.

2. Call for help immediately

Whether you call the police or a tow truck, it's a good idea to call for help right away. You should also turn on your hazard lights, so other vehicles are aware that you're disabled on the side of the road. Move your vehicle as far to the side of the road as possible, and if you have flares, light them around the perimeter of the vehicle (far enough away to avoid causing a fire).

3. Be aware

Finally, be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone headed off the roadway and toward you, you should attempt to move or at least brace for the potential impact. If you're able to protect yourself in any way, it's important to do so. For example, if you're on the side of the road and suspect a vehicle is going to hit yours while you're outside, get as far away from the potential wreck as possible before it happens.

These tips can help keep you protected when you're stuck on the highway. Be aware of your surroundings and stay safe.
