Personal injury recovery likely for victim of freakish accident

Vehicular accidents can take some unexpected twists, turns and configurations. An incident occurring on Dec. 14 in Cartersville is an example of a chaotic series of events, comprising an accident that caused personal injury and sent two people to hospitals. It started at about 7:18 p.m., when the driver of a pickup truck heading southbound on Burnt Hickory Road veered inexplicably into the northbound lane and struck the driver’s side mirror of another pickup truck, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The 28-year-old Cartersville male who crossed into the oncoming traffic then overcorrected to the other side and went off the roadway on the west side. He then overcorrected back to the left, traveled back onto the northbound lane and crashed head-on into a sedan operated by a 19-year-old male of Cassville. That man’s car went off the east side of Burnt Hickory Road and ended up stationary in a ditch.

The offending pickup rolled over onto its side and started rotating in a counter-clockwise direction, and then struck the front of an oncoming car. The rotating truck then continued its motion and went off the east side of the road, where it landed stationary near the sedan that it had smashed into a few minutes earlier. The 19-year-old man was trapped in the sedan and had to be extricated.

Responders airlifted the man to Atlanta Medical Center for lower extremity injuries. A woman operating a vehicle at the scene apparently was frightened enough by the events that she had to be taken to a hospital due to chest pains. The Georgia State Patrol is continuing its investigation, but it is clear that, based on the reported facts, the operator of the pickup was negligent and most likely liable for monetary damages for the personal injury suffered by the 19-year-old victim.
